How to Grow Cannabis Indoors: Everything I Used to Grow Two Weed Plants in My Closet

If you smoke a lot of weed, growing your own cannabis is a fun way to save money while picking up some self-sufficient skills. Last year, my husband and I decided to grow two plants in the closet of our spare bedroom. We used some old Northern Lights seeds and turned them into smokable bud. Spoiler: it worked! Here’s everything we used to make it happen.

Why We Chose to Grow Indoors

We had some leftover Northern Lights seeds from a friend, so we decided to experiment with a small indoor setup. If you’re new to growing, starting small is a great way to learn without feeling overwhelmed. We opted for soil over hydroponics because it’s cheaper and easier for beginners.

Update: On our next grow, we upgraded to a grow tent in the dining room, which I highly recommend if you have the space. That said, the closet method worked great and saved us about $100.

What We Used

Here’s a breakdown of our setup and products:

1. Growing Medium
We used a mix of FoxFarm soil and perlite. The seeds started in a seedling dome near a sunny window, then moved to solo cups, and finally to 3-gallon fabric pots placed inside a large plastic storage bin. To help reflect light, we insulated the bin with Mylar sheets and spray adhesive.

2. Lighting
For the early stages, we added LED strip lights inside the bin. Once the plants grew larger, we switched to a 600W LED grow light hung from the closet rack with an adjustable hanging system.

To automate the 12/12 light cycle (12 hours of light and 12 hours of complete darkness) needed during flowering, we used mechanical outlet timers. This was a lifesaver — no forgetting to turn off the lights!

3. Airflow and Odor Control
To regulate airflow, we used four 120mm computer fans powered by a 12V molex adapter. Once the plants got bigger, we installed a 4” inline centrifugal fan with 4” dryer vent tubing to keep air circulating.

For odor control, we used a 4”x18” carbon filter and a HEPA air purifier. The purifier worked wonders for eliminating any lingering smells around the house.

4. Temperature and Humidity
We kept an eye on conditions using a humidity and temperature gauge and a temperature controller mounted outside the closet door. A small oscillating fan and an ultrasonic humidifier ran most of the time to maintain airflow and humidity.

5. Watering and Nutrients
We set up an auto-drip irrigation pump to handle watering, which is perfect if you need to leave for the weekend. For nutrients, we used Fox Farm liquid fertilizers and followed the directions on the bottles for feeding.

To monitor plant health, we tested soil and water with a pH tester and hydroponic pH control kit. For pruning leaves, we used sharp shears. (Pro tip: Add the trimmings to a salad or smoothie for extra greens. My cats love the leaves as a treat!)

Harvesting and Results

After about four months, we harvested the plants. We hung the stems on clothes hangers for about a week and a half to dry before trimming the buds. Although we forgot to weigh the final product, we’ve been smoking it for months, so I’ll call that a success!

Tips for First-Time Growers

1. Read Up: We used the Cannabis Grow Bible as our guide. It’s incredibly detailed and walked us through each phase of the process. If you’re serious about growing, a resource like this is invaluable.

2. Start Small: Two plants were manageable for our first grow, and we learned a lot without overcommitting.

3. Experiment and Learn: Your first grow is a learning experience. Factors like seeds, strain, and care methods all affect the outcome, so focus on improving each time.
